What we like about Avani: Their entire catalog features plastic alternatives with a focus on cassava.

Cassava Bags

Bags made from cassava starch

  • Bioplastic is often somewhat translucent. Bioplastic films usually feels a tad more rough than traditional plastic, but the texture isn't visible.

  • Cassava is a naturally regenerative resource, unlike fossil fuels. It’s unclear if Avani uses fossil fuel-based additives to aid with flexibility.

  • Avani claims that their cassava film will break down in home compost set ups. Ask for certifications to ensure that the bags were adequately tested for complete biodegradation and proper composting.

  • Bioplastics look and feel like traditional plastic. Proper disposal information should be an important part of the design so that they don't end up in the wrong waste stream. Let customers know if they should recycle or compost the plastic. If composting is the best case scenario, it's good to let customers know that if they can't compost it, that it's best if the plastic is reused or thrown in with the trash. Tossing bioplastic in with recycling just adds an extra step on the way to landfill.

You could consider a takeback program. If you can work with an industrial composter that accepts bioplastic, you can bulk compost your packaging on behalf of customers.

Bagasse Clamshells

Bagasse is the dry residual fibers from sugarcane production.

  • A bright white and soft touch molded fiber.

  • Bagasse is derived from sugarcane which is renewable, unlike fossil fuels.

As with all molded fiber products, designers must be mindful of the high carbon footprint associated with heat used to “cook” the fiber, and a high water footprint associated with with processing.

  • Recycling is best if fibers are clean, compost if vessel is soiled with food waste.

  • Can be embossed or debased with custom branding.
