What we like about UPB: Strong internal sustainability initiatives including FSC/SFI chain of custody certifications, LEED Gold certified HQ, on-site solar power, and a unique energy efficient press cooling system. Also they do rigid boxes (often hard to source domestically).

Utah Paper Box Overview: Utah PaperBox is a folding carton and rigid packaging manufacturer based in Salt Lake City. Legacy manufacturer with over 100+ years of experience serving food and beverage, cosmetics, automotive, technology, house products, technology, medical/pharmaceutical. High quality sustainability efforts around manufacturing and sourcing.

Folding Cartons

  • Folding cartons are made from a sturdy, yet foldable board. Because it’s still relatively flexible, there are several printing options for a glossy or matte finish.

  • In general folding cartons are a sustainable option due to widely available recycling and low volume when packed-flat. Aim to maximize recycled content used.

Internally UPB supports strong internal sustainability initiatives including LEED Gold certified HQ, on-site solar and a unique energy-efficient press cooling system. The facility has FSC and SFI chain of custody certifications. UPB is Ecovadis Bronze certified (which looks at Environment, Labor Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement) and is FSSC 22000 certified for food-safe packaging.

  • UPB offers both high quality digital printing as well as laminated litho. Reasonable MOQs at around 500 units. Full-suite of embellishments available including cold foil, stamping, UV, and soft touch available. Beyond folding cartons and rigid boxes, UPB also does POP displays if needed. Not many domestic suppliers offer high quality rigid boxes, so it’s nice to keep UPB in mind.

  • The best afterlife for most paper products — from collateral to boxes — is recycling. Most paper fibers can be recycled more than five times. Paper with tape or stickers can still be recycled, because non-paper materials are sifted out in the recycling process.

Rigid Boxes

  • You may be most familiar with rigid boxes that were used to package your latest phone or jewelry. Unlike folding carton boxes, rigid boxes can’t fold flat. They’re typically made from a highly recycled paper, then wrapped with a smoother — often high-end — paper.

There are many layers for customization. Sometimes, fabrics and foils are added for a more unique tactile experience.

  • Due to their weight and inability to pack flat (unless specially designed to do so) Rigid boxes carry a higher carbon footprint in production in shipping than folding cartons. However, these specialty boxes are generally reserved for gifts, promotions, and high-end items.
