What we like about Ecologic Brands: The paper is made from 100% recycled fibers and Ecologic claims that the plastic liner requires up to 70% less plastic than plastic-only bottles. They recycle on site where they manufacture.

Plastic Bottles in Molded Pulp Shells

Molded pulp shell with a thin plastic liner that’s designed to be separated for disposal.

  • Ecologic’s Eco.bottle® looks like a paper bottle, but inside is a separate plastic bottle where the liquid is actually held. The molded paper shell adds extra support which enables the the plastic bottle inside to be made from thinner (i.e. less) plastic.

  • The paper is made from 100% recycled paper and Ecologic claims that the plastic liner requires up to 70% less plastic than plastic-only bottles. They recycle on site where they manufacture.

While the inner plastic bottle is made from fossil fuels, it uses less material than traditional bottles because the paper shell offers extra support and rigidity.

Still, there are some potential issues with this solution. First, we’re unsure how feasible it is that recyclers will process this thinner plastic. Thin plastics are often discarded because they’re low-value and difficult to process.

Also, molded pulp has a high energy footprint because of the heat required in manufacturing.

  • To recycle, the paper and plastic components need to be separated. If the bottle and lid are made from two types of plastic, it they can’t be recycled together. If they’re made solely from HDPE (#2 plastic), it has a higher likelihood of being recycled.

  • This is a unique product that combines paper and plastic — two materials which can’t be recycled together. Abundant messaging is recommended to ensure proper disposal.

Bottles can be customized with printed labels.
