Cruz Foam

Cruz Foam

🏭 Santa Cruz, California

What we like about Cruz Foam: The only supplier we know of that’s making foam from chitin, the organic polymer present in the exoskeletons of crabs and shrimp.

Chitin Trays

A bio-based foam made from chitin, the organic polymer present in the exoskeletons of crabs and shrimp.

  • Cruz foam is designed as a replacement for EPE and EPS cushioning foams. Different hardnesses are available, some softer with more bounce and some like a dry sponge.

  • As of now, chitin (an organic polymer found in the exoskeletons of crabs and shrimp) is a renewable resource. This makes it a great alternative to foams made from fossil fuel-based plastic, which is not a renewable resource.

All foams take a sustainability hit when it comes to the space they require to ship when compared with something like molded pulp trays which can nest in shipping to distribution centers.

  • Cruz Foam’s chitin foam is home compostable and curbside recyclable. The foam is washed out in the slurry, leaving the fibers from the paper to be recycled.

    Certifications:

    • ASTM D6400

    • D6868

  • Bioplastics look and feel like traditional plastic, so proper disposal information should be an important part of the design, so that they don't end up in the wrong waste stream. Consumers should know that Cruz Foam is both home compostable and curbside recyclable.
