Mushroom Packaging

Mushroom Packaging

🏭 New York, US

What we like about Mushroom Packaging: Formerly called Ecovative, Mushroom Packaging is one of the pioneers of mycelium foam packaging. The material is proven in high volume market applications and becoming more cost competitive every year.

Mycelium Foam Trays

home- compostable alternative to styrofoam. mushroom roots are grown to bind together hemp hurds.

  • Mushroom foam feels light, but it has more weight and density than styrofoam. It’s very soft to the touch and less abrasive than many plastic foams. It can take coloring, but it’s often a natural beige color.

  • Mushroom foam is made from mushroom roots and hemp hurds — both renewable materials. Previously, hemp hurds (short fibers from the hemp stalk) were discarded as waste. Mushroom Packaging recycles the material into foam.

Like most foam inserts, these take a hit when it comes to shipping space. Since the mushroom foam inserts can’t typically nest into one another, they may take up more space in shipping than something like a molded paper tray.

  • Mushroom foam is home compostable. The company cites that it can be added to soil to compost in 45 days. If it's not composted, then it should be disposed of with regular trash.

  • Mushroom foam has a very unique texture, so end customers will need guidance to best dispose of it.

Use adequate messaging to let customers know they can compost mushroom foam with their food scraps, or simply bury it in the soil.
