Yayyy

🏭 San Francisco,US & Taiwan

What we like about Yayyy: They’re focused on home compostable, food safe pouches including coffee bags with degassing valves. Fun range of stock options including metallic and holographic.

Bioplastic Blend Pouch

for coffee or dry food. Home compostable, with options for zippers or valves.

  • It’s unclear exactly what Yayyy’s bags are made from, but because they’re compostable, we know that they’re made from a type of bioplastic.

They specialize in standup bags which are thicker and more rigid like laminated plastics.

  • Laminated plastics are notoriously difficult (if not impossible) to recycle because they’re made from a combination of different plastics, so Yayyy’s compostable options are a great bioplastic alternative.

Bioplastics are derived primarily from renewable materials from plants or animals, instead of fossil fuels which are not renewable. Some bioplastics may have fossil fuel additives to enhance certain performance properties like flexibility.

It’s unclear exactly what these bags are made of, but they do meet the standards of industrial composting certifications (see disposal).

  • Yayyy’s bags are certified home compostable. If they’re not composted, they should be disposed of with regular trash.

    Compostability certifications:

    • BPI® Commercially compostable

    • DIN Industrial compostable

    • TÜV AUSTRIA (EN 13432)

  • Yayyy has high quality printing and die-cutting options available.

Since bioplastics look and feel like traditional plastic, proper disposal information should be an important part of the design so that they don't end up in the wrong waste stream. Let customers know if they should recycle or compost the plastic. If composting is the best case scenario, it's good to let customers know that if they can't compost it, that it's best if the plastic is reused or thrown in with the trash. Tossing bioplastic in with recycling just adds an extra step on the way to landfill.

You could consider a takeback program. If you can work with an industrial composter that accepts bioplastic, you can bulk compost your packaging on behalf of customers.
