What we like about TIPA: They manufacture single and multi-ply films and laminates that are certified for home and industrial compost with plenty of stock options available.

Bioplastic/Traditional Plastic Films and Laminates

Clear, metalized, and colored options available.

  • TIPA’s bioplastic looks and feels like traditional plastic, with options for clear and colored films and laminates as well as metalized laminates.

  • TIPA doesn’t offer complete transparency about what their films are made from, but they do say that they’re made from a mix of bio-sourced polymers and fossil fuel-based polymers.

They say that they’re products are “up to two thirds bio-sourced and vice versa.”

Their priority seems to be on replicating the look and performance of high-end plastic food packaging.

  • All TIPA products are certified home or industrial compostable.

    Compostability certifications:

    • TÜV OK Compost Home

    • EN 13432

    • ASTM D6400

    • AS 4736/AS 5810

  • Bioplastics look and feel like traditional plastic. Proper disposal information should be an important part of the design so that they don't end up in the wrong waste stream.

Composting is the best case scenario, but it's good to let customers know that if they can't compost it, that the plastic should be reused or thrown in with the trash. Tossing bioplastic in with recycling just adds an extra step on the way to landfill.

You could consider a takeback program. If you can work with an industrial composter that accepts bioplastic, you can bulk compost your packaging on behalf of customers.
