What we like about Henkel: Their unique padded mailers are a paper-based, recyclable replacement for bubble mailers.

Padded Paper Mailers

LINED WITH FOAM-LIKE PADDING MADE FROM STARCH that’s compatible with paper recycling.

  • Kraft mailers have the feel of butcher paper, but the paper is typically thicker while still being flexible. These are made from two layers of kraft paper, lined with dots of adhesive. You may have received Amazon packages in these mailers.

Because these mailers are lined, pre-printing may be the only customization option, and only reserved for high volumes.

  • Starch based padding won’t inhibit the recyclability of these mailers because it will be sifted out in the recycling process.

GP claims these mailers are “sustainably sourced,” but you should ask for documentation on certifications (FSC or SFI) or any lifecycle analyses they can provide.

These mailers are not made from recycled paper, which might have been a decision for added durability. Virgin fiber has a better water barrier than recycled fiber, and it will be a slightly safer option for shipping in wet climates.

  • The best afterlife for most paper products — from collateral to boxes — is recycling. Most paper fibers can be recycled more than five times. Paper with tape or stickers can still be recycled, because non-paper materials are sifted out in the recycling process.

  • If printing is available, note that printed designs will take on the finish of the paper.
